There is not cost. Vulcraft is covering the expenses and lunch will be provided.
What WIll Be Covered
The basic community development workshop will cover the following topics:
a) Briefing on forces facing rural communities. A brief overview of the macro-forces affecting rural communities, especially those in East Texas.
b) Basic community development theory. Participants will be introduced to key community concepts like the community field, relational networks, community assets, community capitals (including social capital), interactional field theory, conflict, power, and collaboration.
c) General community development methods. This includes basic community engagement and outreach across multiple populations, community-based planning, and concrete steps for moving from planning to applied action and results.
d) The intersection between community and economic development. This section will demonstrate how both community and economic development are separate, but interdependent, and how they can reinforce one another more effectively.
e) Traditional development strategies. This includes strategies like industrial recruitment, incentives, infrastructure development, human capital development, and other well-known strategies for local improvement.
f) New and emerging development strategies. This offers a very brief overview of some of the new techniques and ideas shaping the field, including specialty business incubation, entrepreneurial ecosystem development, arts-based development, ag-based development, and more.
g) Principles of good practice and pitfalls to avoid. This will focus on principles of good community development practice, and common pitfalls to avoid that affect most community development situations. These will be spaced throughout the course.
h) Applied activities related to community and economic development. Applied and innovation based activities will be used throughout the course to give participants practice in using their new knowledge in real situations.
